NGOs, ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISTS, COMMUNITY and PEOPLE'S ORGANIZATIONS

Objective

To enhance collaboration in coastal and marine environmental management with:

  • NGOs

  • grassroots organizations

  • religious groups

  • environmental journalists

  • other stakeholder groups

The people of the East Asian Seas region are the main actors as well as the main beneficiaries in the sustainable development of their regional ocean and its resources. Hence, developing a mass constituency for the protection of our coastal and marine environment is one of the principal agenda of PEMSEA.

Harnessing the Role of Civil Society

PEMSEA will harness the power of the civil society groups, especially the media to disseminate information on local and regional coastal concerns. To this end, PEMSEA will develop local and regional media linkages and conduct trainings for media practitioners and other civil society groups to provide them a better understanding of coastal and marine issues. A media information resource service will be established to provide environmental journalists with key information on the coastal and marine environment and links to other sources of information. Data of interest to the media will also be provided via PEMSEA's Integrated Information Management System (IIMS).

A participatory approach to coastal and marine management will be developed at each ICM demonstration site and subregional sea area/pollution hot spot to ensure support from stakeholders.

Focus on the Youth - the Future of the East Asian Seas region

Children are the future champions for the protection of the East Asian Seas. Ironically, they are one of the groups most affected by environmental degradation.

Multimedia materials for children on coastal management will be prepared in order to help children have a deeper understanding of the problems and issues in their coastal and marine environment.

PEMSEA will sponsor two youth summer camps to expose young students to the field conditions of coastal ecosystems. The main purpose is to enable the region's youth to have a better appreciation of the marine environment and to cultivate future "champions" for environmental protection. Participant's will be selected based on a contest launched for this purpose. PEMSEA will coordinate with other institutions with an existing youth programme to explore the possibility of institutionalizing the summer camp in the region.
