OPPORTUNITIES:   BALI, INDONESIA

The province of Bali in Indonesia is world-renowned as one of the best tourist destinations. Beautiful island groups offer rich marine habitats, fabulous beaches and dive sites as well as a culture rich with history and rituals. The tourism-based economy contributes no less than 30% of the province’s gross domestic product. Extensive utilization of the marine and coastal natural resources, however, have serious implications on Bali’s ecological, recreational and production values. Recognizing this problem, the integrated coastal management (ICM) project is being implemented in the south-eastern part of Bali, covering an area of 2,065 sq. km., with a population of about 1.8 million people.
