ABOUT PEMSEA> PEMSEA SITE: Demonstration
BALI, INDONESIA

Bali, Indonesia is a world-class tourism destination and is also the home of extensive coastal and marine biodiversity such as sea turtles and other migratory fish species. The site is endowed with habitats such as coral reefs, mangroves and sea grass beds. The Badung Straits and its nearby waterways are also used for international navigation.

Tourism contributes to 31% of its gross domestic product and plays an important role in the economic development of the island. The impacts of the booming international tourism industry, however, has created environmental and management issues, i.e. on waste management and habitat conservation. Major environmental problems include: (a) damage to coral reefs, mangroves and habitats for sea turtles; (b) impacts of sea level rise; (c) pollution of rivers and coastal waters by nutrients, and oil and grease; (d) unregulated coastal sand mining; and (e) risk from oil loading terminal and shipping.

To address these problems, the Bali Provincial Government and the National Environmental Impact Agency, in partnership with PEMSEA launched the Bali Integrated Coastal Management Project. The project hopes to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of coastal and marine resources in Bali, taking into account the specific culture, customs and traditions.

The Environmental Management Department of the Bali Provincial Government, BAPEDALDA, acts as the lead agency in project implementation. Project implementation however, is a multi-sectoral effort to be undertaken with the cooperation of other government agencies, the local hotel association, the tourism industry, environmental NGOs, and other stakeholders.
