ABOUT PEMSEA> PEMSEA SITE: Demonstration
CHONBURI, THAILAND

The national ICM demonstration site in Thailand is located in the Province of Chonburi, about 100 kilometers east of Bangkok. The ICM site consists initially of two municipalities: Sriracha and Laem Chabang. Sriracha is a fishing community of an area of 4.058 square kilometers, with about 26,000 population. Laem Chabang is an industrial area. It has a total area of 109 square kilometers. Being an industrial area, it has industrial estate and export processing zone, and international commercial port. Major oil refineries are located in the municipality. There area about 38,000 people residing in the area.

The site is facing environmental problems such as habitat destruction, overfishing, occurrence of red tide, uncontrolled use of coastal and marine waters, and marine pollution coming from land- and sea-based sources. The Chonburi ICM Demonstration Site aims to address these issues by strengthening local capacity in managing coastal and marine environment.

An inception workshop was held in Chonburi in May 2000. The workshop was attended by more than 60 representatives from central and local government agencies, industry, NGO's and academe. An action plan was formulated and adopted by the workshop, covering three areas:

  1. Confirmation of the physical/administrative boundaries of the ICM project
  2. Establishment of a Project Coordinating Committee
  3. Development of a five-year workplan and budget.
