PORT KLANG,
MALAYSIA
The district of Klang is located on the west coast of Malaysia,
about 50 km southwest of Kuala Lumpur. Situated in the Klang district
is the largest port in Malaysia, Port Klang, which has a capacity
of 80 million tonnes of cargo and accounts for 37 percent of the
total trade handled by Malaysian ports. An estimated 11,000 ships
arrive in Port Klang each year making Klang a major industrial,
commercial and shipping center.
Environmental problems and issues stem from the impacts of rapid
port expansion and the booming industrial zone on mangrove habitats
and traditional fisheries. Management issues include: (a) systematic
management programs to address major environmental problems; (b)
effective involvement of stakeholders in the review/approval of
major coastal development projects; (c) integrated planning for
various marine development activities; (d) rapid reclamation of
coastal areas contributing to the losses of mangrove habitats; (e)
inadequate waste management and disposal facilities; and (f) erosion
and sedimentation.
The State Government of Selangor is playing the lead role in the
implementation of a national ICM demonstration project in the Klang.
In collaboration with local stakeholders, and with PEMSEA support,
the State Government will implement a management program in Klang
focused on land-sea use planning, sustainable use of coastal and
marine resources, environmental protection and mitigation of pollution
problems.
