ABOUT PEMSEA> PEMSEA
SITE: Demonstration
NAMPHO,
DPR KOREA
Nampho is about 40 kilometers away from the national capital Pyongyang
and is situated in the middle part of the Korean West Sea where
the Taedong River enters the sea. The region has high biological
productivity and diverse marine flora and fauna.
Nampo is one of the country's major ports with an eight kilometer
long West Sea Barrage spanning the mouth of the Taedong River. The
construction of a dyke in the area resulted in significant siltation
of the river, thus affecting navigational use of the area and increased
the risk of ship accidents. Industrial and municipal sewage discharges
add to the environmental concerns of the area.
The country attaches increased importance to the environment. The
integrated coastal management (ICM) approach has been accepted as
a potential effective management alternative to prevent further
environment degradation and resolving use conflicts.
PEMSEA has recently completed consultations with government officials
and local stakeholders for the establishment of an ICM demonstration
site to enhance local capacity in managing coastal areas. One specific
purpose of the project is the conservation of critical habitats
and the prevention of marine pollution.
