Opening Ceremony

Over 800 participants gathered at the People's Assembly Hall for the Opening Ceremony of the East Asian Seas Congress 2006.
The Director General of the Department of International Cooperation of the State Oceanic Administration of China, Dr. Li Haiqing, served as the Master of Ceremony during the Opening Ceremony.
Mr. Chen Ci, Mayor of Haikou City, welcomed delegates to the host city, adding that Haikou benefits from marine resources and tourism, highlighting the importance of oceans legislation in sustainable management and development.
Dr. Chua Thia-Eng welcomed participants to the Congress, mentioning that the Congress provides a platform for participants from within and outside the region to share information on all aspects of coastal and ocean governance.
His Excellency Chuan Leekpai, former Prime Minister of Thailand, delivered the Keynote Address, calling for a wider vision for protecting the region’s coasts and oceans.
Dr. Alfred Duda of the GEF Secretariat addressed the delegates as Plenary Chair of the International Conference.
Small but terrible - Huang Junyi of PR China shared her hopes and dreams for a better seas to the delegates of the EAS Congress 2006.
9-year old Jenio Mickael Bermas Atrigenio from the Philippines, appealed to the delegates to continue working hard for the protection and development of the seas of the region for the benefit of future generations.
