Mr. S. Adrian Ross, Senior Programme Officer, PEMSEA, hosted the Plenary Sessions on 13-14 December. On 13 December, Ms. Magda Lovei, The World Bank, emphasized the need for innovative approaches to pollution control, including the need to scale up successful pilot programs on alternative livelihoods and strengthen regional partnerships, among others. Dr. Gunnar Kullenberg, Former Executive Secretary of the International Oceanographic Commission, introduced the plenary keynote speakers. Mr. Paul van Hofwegen, World Water Council, focused on water, environment and development and achieving the MDG targets in water and sanitation through local governments; capacity building; public-private partnerships; and implementation of integrated water resources management, among others. On 14 December, Prof. Su Jilan, Honorary Director, China’s State Oceanic Administration (SOA), presented on the experiences in the seas of China in the application of ecosystem-based management and integrated ocean and coastal management.
He also mentioned that the challenges for sustainability of marine and coastal ecosystems remain an important area for research and science,
